On October 4, 1970: Janis Joplin dies at the age of 27:

Janis Lyn Joplin, born January 19, 1943, 9:45am to Seth and Dorothy Joplin in Port Arthur, Texas, overdosed in her room at the Landmark, Hotel in Los Angeles, California. Janis had spent a busy day at the recording studio working on finishing touches on the "Pearl" album. After returning to the motel that evening around 10:00pm, Janis retired to her room. Needing cigarettes and not able to sleep, she went to the motel lobby to buy cigarettes out of the machine, but discovered she didn't have the proper change. She went to the hotel clerk and had them break a five dollar bill. Janis told the clerk she was tired and wanted a 9:00am wake up call. By 2:00pm the following day, band members and a friend were concerned because they hadn't seen Janis all day and it was unlike Janis not to be up and around. After numerous calls to her room with no luck, a friend and a hotel clerk knocked on the door of her room with no response. They then entered the room where they found Janis in the fetal position between the bed and dresser. She was dead! It is speculated that she passed away around 3:30am. Janis was cremated and her ashes were scattered along the Marin County coastline in California.
